Join us for our live-stream Steam playtests!

We are doing a live-stream playtest as part of the Steam Autumn Festival. It is happening Wednesday the 7th of October at UTC 11PM (US Central 6PM, UK 12AM 8 Oct 20).

Live stream and chat can be accessed at the Steam event below:

Our own creative dev, @GM_Cerberus, will be the host for the livestream so you can chat while you hunt him down in space! He will be sharing all kinds of fun facts about the development of Age of Ascent.

However, please do participate in the playtest as a player! To reserve your place for our playtest, sign your pilot up at https://portal.ageofascent.com, if you have participated before and want to use an existing account and pilot name, or if you go through the Steam demo app that is part of the festival, you can sign up with a new pilot (currently if you have used a different authentication method than Steam going via the demo app won’t link your account so you will not be able to use your current pilot name).

Please return to https://portal.ageofascent.com when the next playtest is due to start, and you will be automatically admitted. After the playtest has finished, please come back to this thread to give us your feedback and comments!

We are only running the PvP experience in this live-stream playtest, not the full game. You’ll get the best experience if you have equipment suitable for piloting (eg mouse and keyboard, or a gamepad controller - we do not currently support joysticks, but will in the future)

You’ll need to be in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge web browsers on any OS of your choice

We will also be doing a playtest on Thursday 8 Oct 20, UTC 3PM (US Central 10AM, UK 4PM) and another livestream with GM’s @GM_stormcrow and @GM_Cerberus on Saturday 10 Oct 20, UTC 7PM (US Central 2PM, UK 8PM). See you there!

We may do further playtests based on demand from the festival and will keep an updated list here:

  • Wednesday 7 Oct 2020, UTC 11PM (US Central 6PM, UK 12AM 8 Oct 20)
  • Thursday 8 Oct 2020, UTC 3PM (US Central 10AM, UK 4PM)

There seems to be an issue with the game running on MacBook Pro. I know my computer should be getting better performance due to my Surface Go getting better frames and lower reaction time.

https://youtu.be/_D4SQ9yOHlM - Here’s me attempting to play in 4k, and got minimal frames. I didn’t expect to do very well running anything in 4k lol

https://youtu.be/VPRr0KfnZE8 - Here’s 1280 on the same mac, it played a bit better. But still was chugging along.

https://youtu.be/zhsdHaI0MjU - Here’s my 1800 windows attempt. I feel it was better than my MacBook’s performance, despite being very underpowered.

All of the above tests were conducted with only Google Chrome running.

If there was more time, I’d like to test Chrome vs Safari/Edge vs Steam client for both Mac and Windows

Another great playtest!

Also, two CardeniaWus? I don’t know if I can handle that.

Once again, another enjoyable play test. Only complaint is that @PsychoRomeo is too good and can’t be killed without support:P haha Seriously though, you gotta teach me how to do that spiraling maneuver.

2 Cardenia Wu’s? I never saw a double:P

Sorcery!

Tell you what, I’ll teach you how to spiral if you teach me how to invoke duplicity.

lol I wish I had an answer for that:P

Really glad to have the throttle on the mouse wheel, it made it a lot easier to control the ship.

I seemed to notice that my health degraded faster the lower it actually was. Was this a game mechanic, or just my perception?

One other thing I was wondering about; was is supposed to be every-pilot-for-themselves? I might be really interesting to get some teams together.

There was one name I swear I saw two of at the same time. Started with Card and ended with Wu. I suppose it could have been a subtle spelling error. The whole thing was just a big hairball. It was easier to try to stick with one target thanks to the throttle on the mouse wheel but that’s a relative statement, which is to say it’s still tough to stick with a target. And it still seems like I was softening up targets just to get killed and leave an easy one for someone else.

Still great fun, and can’t wait to see more game play!

Wow that was hard!

Yeah, I don’t perform nearly as well when there’s not a curtain of chaos to hide in, haha.

That was good fun! This was more indicative of a small squad fight or brawl at a contested asteroid belt. I’d love to be the victor there and clean up the spoils!

While you’re under fire, there’s really only two speeds - full throttle forward, and full throttle reverse. Anything inbetween nerfs your strafe too hard and you become too easy to aim at.

Full reverse is much slower than full throttle forward in terms of top speed, but doesn’t appear to have any strafe penalty. This means that if you’re reversing as your enemy is approaching, they will need to slow down or they’ll overtake you and have to do a loop or something (during which you can easily fire at them). And due to the strafing penalty, a slow moving target is an easy target to hit. I think this is what makes reverse throttle so powerful in a dogfight.

Which is kinda the opposite of what you think of when you say “dogfight”. But I find that playing like a little drone turret is much more effective than playing like, say, an airplane.

I feel this is going to be addressed when we implement inertia in the very near future.
